- Despite Ukraine’s airspace closure due to war, Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport maintained full operational readiness throughout 2025.
- The airport continued infrastructure upkeep, staff training, and strategic planning for civil aviation resumption.
- It also joined discussions on sustainable aviation insurance for Ukraine and was recognised by ACI EUROPE for exceptional resilience during wartime.
Despite nearly four years of full-scale war and the continued closure of Ukrainian airspace to civil aviation, Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport has remained fully operational in all critical areas — maintaining its infrastructure, technical systems, and personnel to enable a swift return to air services once conditions allow.
The airport’s 2025 operational review, released this month, details efforts to preserve its civil aviation capabilities and highlights the broader conversation now taking place around post-war recovery and reinsurance frameworks for Ukraine’s aviation sector.
Under martial law, the airport’s primary focus has been the protection of infrastructure and technical readiness. Navigation systems, the runway, and ground-handling equipment have all been actively maintained. While no passenger or commercial cargo flights are currently permitted, the airport continues round-the-clock technical oversight to preserve aviation safety systems and ensure IT and communications continuity.
“The airport is focused on overcoming security challenges, preserving property and the integrity of infrastructure facilities. The readiness of the airport complex, runway, equipment and navigation systems is constantly maintained – critical elements for a significant resumption of flights,” says in a LinkedIn post.

Employee numbers have been reduced to around 30 percent of pre-war staffing levels, but training has continued. Nearly 1,400 personnel have received certification updates since 2022, including 100 specialists in 2025 alone, underscoring a strong commitment to keeping skilled teams in place.
“Preservation of qualified personnel is a key asset of the airport and the foundation for a rapid and safe resumption of flights,” the airport stated.
In 2025, Lviv Airport participated in industry-wide discussions on creating a sustainable aviation insurance and reinsurance model for Ukraine — seen as an essential requirement for restoring civil air traffic. Airport leadership has held regular consultations with Ukrainian and international airlines regarding future cargo and passenger routes, as well as operational priorities post-reopening.
The effort mirrors broader European and global dialogue about how and when Ukrainian airspace can be safely reintegrated into civil aviation networks — and what role regional hubs like Lviv will play.
In recognition of its wartime performance, the airport received a Resilience Award from ACI EUROPE (Airports Council International Europe), and was commended by the Ukrainian Parliament’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee for its contribution to the aviation sector during martial law.
The report concludes with a message of thanks to airport staff, national defenders, and industry partners — along with a quiet optimism about what 2026 may hold.
