EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg’s freight volumes remained stable in 2016 at 101,000 tonnes with strong airfreight growth making up for a fall in trucked freight.

Freight volumes grew to 101,300 tonnes in 2016 from 101,050 tonnes in the previous year, with airfreight growing 12 per cent to 54,944 tonnes while trucking freight was down 11 per cent to 46,356 tonnes due to rising cost pressures and the continuing shift from air to sea freight.

Freight only volumes rose 13 per cent to 12,367 tonnes while express was also up 12 per cent to 42,577 tonnes.

EuroAirport says it expects freight volumes to remain at about 100,000 tonnes but is aiming to gain International Air Transport Association (IATA) Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) in Pharmaceutical Logistics certification.

In cooperation with other airfreight stakeholders, EuroAirport launched the IATA CEIV certification process in June 2016 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2017.
